IRFANVIEW

Windows 98, XP, Vista or Windows 7

 

These tips are for version 4.25.

These may not be the latest version but should be applicable.

Irfanview is occasionally updated, as needed.

 

Most beginning users will only need the basic Irfanview program

and will not need to install the  “All Plugins”

 

Many good Irfanview Tutorials may be found by using Google to search for  "Irfanview Tutorials"

 

Knowing how to set the Irfanview Options can be confusing for first time users/installers.

Here’s some preferred settings to get you started

 

To set the NORMAL Viewing / Editing  Display mode …

so that All displayed images fit the screen …

Click on … View  >    Display options   >    Fit images to Window

Some may prefer to set >    Fit only big Images to Window

 

 

 

 

To set the other Options … Click on …

Options > Properties / Settings

 

 

The Extensions Options

To Set the Image File types to be associated  (opened) with Irfanview …

 

The basic choices might be   BMP, GIF and JPEG.

Uncheck all other Choices that you don’t want to open in Irfanview

 

You can click on “Images Only” and Irfanview will be the Default Viewer for all Images.

This is probably the preferred setting.

 

You can select  “Clear All” and play with it manually until you get used to Irfanview.

Right click on the Image and choose … Open With > Irfanview

 

 

 

While in this Extensions Options Window,

You can click on Icons and choose a different Icon.

You might prefer the Panda Icon.

Image Icons are NOT available in Vista or Windows 7

 

 

 

 

Browsing / Editing Options

You might prefer to have choice #3 checked.

 

 

 

Full Screen / Slide Show  Options

 

 

 

The Toolbar Options

Here’s where you can Customize the Irfanview Tool Bar - and add or remove tools.

To keep it simple, The Tool Bar tools you might prefer to show are ….

Next File in Directory …  Previous File in Directory …. and Properties.

Viewing Options

You might want to increase the Zoom Steps.

 

 

The Full Screen Options

You’ll probably want to set ….  “Fit to screen: all Images/Movies”

And turn Off >  “Show text” … and the “Mouse Cursor”

Some Handy Keyboard/Mouse shortcuts:

 

After zooming into an Image,  Right (click and hold) to reposition the Image.

 

The Enter key will Toggle between Normal viewing and Full Screen modes.

… You can Also …

Double click on the image to enter the Full Screen Viewing Mode.

While in the Full Screen viewing Mode - Left or Right click to scan thru the images.

Press the center mouse key (under the scroll wheel) to return to the Normal viewing mode.

 

While in the Thumbnail Browser, the up and down arrow keys will scan the current folder list.

Irfanview can also run your Scanner.

It will Acquire the Scan into Irfanview where it can be previewed and edited before saving the Image somewhere.

 

In Irfanview, go to File > Select Twain Source … and choose your Scanner Driver.

… You should only have to do this once, the first time …

 

To get the scan, go to File > Acquire/Batch Scanning .. and follow the directions.

This will be the same as, but quicker than, using M$ Camera and Scanner Wizard.

 

 

The following shortcuts will be downloaded in a zip folder.

These shortcuts can be downloaded by clicking on the shortcuts below.

To unzip .. open the zip folder and drag the content to your desktop.

These Shortcuts only work in 32 bit Operating systems

 

The following shortcut will start Irfanview in the scanner acquire mode

With your Scanner turned on ..

Click the Shortcut and Irfanview will start the Scanner operation.

 

This Shortcut will start the scanner dialog screen.

 

 

The following Shortcuts will set the scanner to scan at 150dpi  or 300dpi and start the scan.

          

 

 

Irfanview can also be used to capture Screen Shots.

Press the PrtScr key (beside the F12 key) to Copy the picture going to your monitor.

Or, Press ALT+PrtScr to Copy just the active window being displayed.

 

Then open Irfanview and Paste the Copied Screen Shot to Irfanview.

Then save this picture as your Screen Shot.

 

This shortcut can be used to run Irfanview and Paste the screen shot.

This shortcut requires that you press the PrtScr key or the Alt+PrtScr keys.

 

 

This shortcut will copy the entire screen and open it in Irfanview

 

 

 

****************************   Other Irfanview Icons   ****************************

Irfanview Icons can be used to identify the Image file types.

To use these other Icons, you will need to have the Irfanview “All Plugins” installed.

These Icons only work in XP ..

Since Vista or Windows 7 does not allow Image Icons to be displayed.

These Icons are for the most used Image file types …

 

And the entire set looks like …

 

To install these new Icons … Replace the file   “Icon.dll”   in the folder ..

C:\Program Files\IrfanView\Plugins …

With this one >>>    Icons.dll

 

Then set the Properties >> Extensions >> Miscellaneous >>

to Use different icons .. (Icons-PlugIn)
